Maruti Car Sales Growth

Domestic passenger car sales continued to post healthy double-digit growth in August at 17.92 per cent led by market leader Maruti Udyog, while the downhill ride for motorcycles continued with a dip of 11.09 per cent.


According to the monthly sales figures released by the Society of Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the total vehicle sales in the country witnessed a dip of 1.67 per cent at 7,39,157 units as against 7,51,775 units in the same month a year ago.

Domestic passenger car sales in the country in August stood at 98,893 units against 83,864 units in the corresponding month a year ago, SIAM said.

Market leader MUL posted a healthy 24 per cent increase in sales during the month at 52,055 units as against 41,728 units in the same period last year.

Industry experts pointed out that MUL's growth had been driven mainly by its agressive marketing. During the month, it had run a scheme -- Smile India Smile -- offering upto Rs 40,000 discounts across various models.

Rival Hyundai Motor India had a marginal improvement at 16,115 units as against 16,067 units in the corresponding month a year ago. Homegrown major Tata Motors, however, recorded a decline of 3.56 per cent at 13,588 units as against 14,090 units.

General Motors India also continued to clock a healthy growth of 18.63 per cent at 3,017 units as against 2,543 units in the same month last year. The company's growth has been driven by its compact cars Chevrolet Spark and U-VA, which together clocked 2,975 units.

On the motorcycles front, total domestic sales stood at 4,18,702 units compared to 4,70,955 units in the same month last year. The decline was witnessed despite market leader Hero Honda notching 10.65 per cent growth at 221,541 units as against 200,208 units in the same month last year.

Rival Bajaj Auto continued to suffer dip in sale at 121,369 units as against 158,636 units in the same month a year ago, down 23.49 per cent. The biggest loser, however, is TVS Motor, which saw its bike sales crash by a whopping 51.44 per cent at 36,138 units as against 74,426 units in the same month last year.

In the scooter segment, almost all major players posted positive growth. The segment witnessed an increase of 25.92 per cent at 91,158 units as against 72,391 units in the corresponding month last year.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India continued to lead the growth in scooter market with 51,122 units during the month as against 38,094 units last year, up 34.19 per cent. Hero Honda also managed an impressive growth of 78.29 per cent at 11,309 units as agaisnt 6,343 units in the corresponding month last year. Bajaj Auto also saw its sales increase by 88.48 per cent at 2,718 units as against 1,442 units last year.

SIAM said total three-wheeler sales in the country were down by 3.15 per cent at 33,588 units in August as against 34,691 units in the same month a year ago.

Commercial vehicles sales were up by 2.23 per cent in August with 36,409 units compared to 35,268 units in the corresponding month a year ago, SIAM said. While sales of Medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCV) were down by 7.95 per cent at 19,431 units in August, total light commercial vehicles reported a 19.91 per cent increase in sales during the month at 16,978 units, SIAM added
